BMW M4 (F82, 2014-2020) – MPG and running costs

With a turbocharged engine, the M4 is more frugal and efficient than previous generations

Evo rating
  • Serious straight line performance; dry-weather handling
  • Can be tricky in the wet and on challenging roads

The move to turbocharging made the M4 much more frugal than its naturally-aspirated V8 forebear, the E92 M3. BMW’s official economy figure is 34mpg, but in reality mid-20s is much more likely on a motorway cruise. Perhaps more crucial is that pushing on in the M4 doesn't completely cripple the average fuel consumption figure.

As for running costs, tyres are obviously expensive and given the way that the M4 delivers its torque, you will get through them. Expect to pay around £1000 to fit a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres – important to consider, especially if you're planning track days.

Other parts won’t be cheap either given that it’s an M Division model, and expect most consumables to carry a premium over standard 4-series parts.
