The Porsche 911 as you've never seen it before

Chris Labrooy animates the iconic 911 2.7 RS in these very funky artworks

During my last year of university I spent at least some time writing a dissertation about the BMW Art Cars (it was part of my degree, not just for fun). As a result, it’s fair to say that I have a passing interest in automobiles in art. Imagine my joy, then, at seeing these rather wonderful new creations from Chris Labrooy, released this week.

Using the iconic shape of a Porsche 911 2.7 RS, Labrooy has produced some wonderfully stylised work, with clean strong shapes and attractively bold colours. Set in Palm Springs, there is something almost saccharine about the polish of the cartoonish images. Equally, I love the way that the cars are anthropomorphised by the actions that Labrooy has them performing or positions he has put them in. It perhaps helps that the 911, with its round headlight eyes, has one of the most expressive faces of any car. Labrooy graduated with an MA in product design from the RCA and does commercial work for Clients as disparate as Nike, Transport for London and McDonald’s.

This is not the first time that Labrooy has put cars into his art either. Have a look at this great short animated film based around Japanese car culture with an NSX cruising around in the background.
