Caterham R300: Caterham R300

339bhp/ton Superlight R300 takes its place in Caterham range

Caterham has announced a new R300, which ditches Rover power of old in favour of a 2-litre Ford Duratec engine. It comes Caterham-tuned, delivering 175bhp and 139lb ft - which in the 515kg Superlight R300 equates to 0-60mph in 4.5sec and a top speed of 140mph.

The more startling figure, though, and the one which most characterises the car is the power to weight ratio - 339bhp/ton, which bests more exotic (and indeed, pricey) stuff such as the Aston DBS, Ferrari F430 Spider and Porsche 997 GT3 RS. The R300 costs a mere fraction of those at £24,995 in kit form, or an extra £3k if you fancy it ready-built.

For that price you also gain the flush-button dashboard and keyless ignition in the R500, while a limited-slip diff is an option for those who want to demolish supercars on the track.
