Mercedes-AMG E63 review (2010-2017) – design

A hugely compelling fast saloon and estate. The engine delivers a knockout punch but the chassis can't quite match an M5

  • Effortless power, intuitive and approachable
  • A little lacking in originality, hesitant automatic gearbox

The E63 is a car now closer to the end of its model cycle than it is the start, but it remains a handsome shape whether in saloon or estate form. Facelifted in 2013, the E-class range as a whole received a more curvaceous front end with LED daytime running lights. The rear was lightly refreshed too, but otherwise the general shape is that same as it was on the model’s debut in 2009.

Subtly flared sills, deeper front and rear bumpers and unique alloy wheel designs differentiate the model from more humble E-class models, as do the quad tailpipes and noticeable '5.5 Biturbo' badges on the flanks and boot lid.
