Mercedes-AMG E63 review (2010-2017) – performance and 0-60 time

A hugely compelling fast saloon and estate. The engine delivers a knockout punch but the chassis can't quite match an M5

  • Effortless power, intuitive and approachable
  • A little lacking in originality, hesitant automatic gearbox

The E63 is a car that ranges from very fast in regular trim to astonishingly brisk in the E63 S. There’s not actually a great deal to separate the two different cars in terms of the on-paper figures – the extra urge of the S equates to a single tenth difference in the 0-62mph time, 4.1sec versus 4.2.

Both are restricted by a 155mph electronic speed limiter too, though the rate at which the S in particular accelerates leaves you wondering whether it would ever stop surging forwards. Opt for the Driver’s Package and Mercedes will lift the limiter to 186mph, but it isn’t hard to imagine a 200mph-plus top speed without those electronic restrictions.

While a twin-turbocharged, 5.5-litre V8 will never sip fuel like a Prius, the AMG’s combined 28.8mpg (28.2mpg for the Estate) doesn’t seem too bad either, and those numbers don’t drop for the S. CO2 of 229g/km means there’s a hefty VED bill each year, but in context of the fuel you’ll use it’s an incidental cost. 25mpg is realistic in day-to-day use.
