197bhp Volkswagen Beetle TSI launches

The most powerful VW Beetle on sale in the UK is the 197bhp 2.0-litre TSI, with a GTI engine and Turbo special editions

Volkswagen’s fastest Beetle is now on sale. The 2.0-litre TSI model shares its engine with a number of VW group hot hatchbacks from SEAT, VW and Skoda. It boasts 197bhp and whisks the Beetle to 62mph in 7.5sec, on the way to a 139mph top speed. This is combined with 172g/km CO2 emissions and 38.2mpg fuel economy with the standard six-speed manual gearbox. A six-speed DSG twin-clutch transmission is a £1510 option (and mildly ups fuel consumption and CO2 figures). Available in Sport, Turbo Black and Turbo Silver trims, the most powerful Beetle gains an upgraded, four-link rear suspension set-up over the rest of the range. Twin chrome exhaust pipes, red brake calipers and a new rear diffuser are also standard-fit, alongside 18in alloy wheels, sports seats and climate control. Turbo Black and Turbo Silver trims add appropriately coloured paint, 19in Tornado alloy wheels plus contrasting door decals and mirror caps for a £700 premium over the £22,295 Sport. The 2.0 TSI joins a growing Beetle range, which includes 104bhp 1.2-litre and 158bhp 1.4-litre petrols and a 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel. UK prices range from £16,600 to £24,505.
