New Volkswagen ID.2all concept previews £22,000 EV hatch

The ID.2all concept offers a first look at Volkswagen’s affordable electric hatchback, set to launch in 2025

Volkswagen has revealed the ID.2all concept, a preview of what will become an affordable, all-electric hatchback when it goes on sale in 2025. Set to debut as one of 10 electric Volkswagens planned by 2026, the model will follow in the footsteps of the ID.3, ID.Buzz and upcoming ID.7 saloon, with a compact SUV and cheaper sub-€20,000 (c£17,500) hatch to follow in 2026.

To buck the trend of pricey EVs, Volkswagen is targeting a sub-€25,000 (c£22,000) starting price for the ID.2all in its final form. With the ID.3’s quality issues and problematic digital interfaces giving its EV range a lukewarm reception, the marque’s engineers have worked hard to rectify these sticking points in this promising new model.

Based on a new iteration of the MEB platform found under the skin of the ID.3, the ID.2all will be the first front-wheel drive model in the ID range. Though we’ll have to wait and see which elements make it to market, the concept is powered by a single 223bhp electric motor mounted on the front axle for a sub-7sec 0-62mph and a 99mph top speed.

Battery capacity hasn’t been disclosed, but Volkswagen claims a respectable 280 mile range (WLTP), with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking just 20 minutes using DC rapid charger – 11kW AC home or public charging is also possible.

Perhaps the most significant change is Volkswagen’s approach to ergonomics, with the ID.2all using a separate climate control panel with physical, illuminated buttons in addition to a 12.9-inch main infotainment display and 10.9-inch digital dash – there’s even a physical thumbwheel for volume adjustment, alongside two inductive phone chargers. The lack of control illumination and tactile switchgear has been one of the primary complaints of the ID.3 and the rest of the current range, but that could change by the looks of this concept. 

Despite its entry-level status, the model is said to come with a number of high end features found on the Volkswagen’s more premium products. Travel Assist will enable partially-autonomous driving, with IQ.LIGHT and 3D LED tail light clusters, Park Assist Plus and even electric massaging seats coming as part of the package.

Having penned the Mk7 Golf and spent time as design boss at both Audi and Bentley since, Andreas Mindt has applied fresh thinking to the ID.2all while harking back to icons of the past. The C-pillar design takes inspiration from the first-generation Golf, for example, with emphasis on a strong visual stance which takes advantage of the ID.2all’s long wheelbase and short overhangs.
