MPG and running costs

If you care about either of MPG or running costs, or you’re particularly thrifty, then the G63 is not the car for you. But if you want to know how potentially ruinous the G63 could be financially, then pay attention.

Mercedes claim the G63 will achieve 23.9 mpg on the EU’s extra urban consumption cycle. However, the best – and I do mean the highest – we could achieve was 14.4mpg. When driven on some more demanding roads than motorways, we saw single figures on the MPG read-out.

The G’s 275/50 20 Dunlop SP SportMaxx tyres cost about £200 a corner and, even with the over zealous traction control, that much power, torque and weight means the rubber isn’t likely to last that long. And finally, and not in the least bit surprising, the G63 is in the most expensive vehicle tax band, M.
