Aston Martin DBS Volante spied – a drop-top 715bhp supercar

Following the brisk coupe, Aston Martin is lifting the lid on the DBS

Aston Martin’s new DBS Superleggera Volante has been spotted before, but with the coupe now on the road, we now have an even better idea of what to expect when the model launches early next year. Spied here with little to no camouflage, the menacing cabriolet looks to share the coupe’s aggressive styling, mixed in with an added layer of drop-top drama.

Straight away we can see that the Volante shares the aggressive front-end styling with the coupe. No surprise perhaps, but interestingly the effect is carried along around the rear, with the same four massive exhaust outlets and slim tail lights. The roof has been borrowed from the DB11, but beyond that the DBS’s flatter, more aggressive rear end and 21-inch wheels definitely dial up the design aggression compared to the smoother, more GT-like DB11.

Although many of these details have already been seen on the coupe, look closely and you’ll spot a new set of wheels in a complex 20-spoke design; expect these to coincide with the Volante’s launch.

The DBS’s twin-turbocharged 5.2-litre V12 engine will be carried across, pumping out a massive 715bhp, with 664lb ft of torque available right across the rev range. What will change is the weight figure, as the coupe already comes in at a fairly chunky 1770kg. Expect this figure to rise another 110kg to 1880kg, using the weight variation between the DB11 V8 and its Volante cousin as a guide.

Like the coupe, expect the interior to be heavily based on the DB11’s, sharing the same basic dash and layout and two-plus-two seating layout.

We expect the DBS Volante to launch early 2019, a year likely to be full of new model launches after Aston Martin’s flotation on the stock market.
