Mercedes SLR McLaren Upgrade

Special edition of Mercedes SLR McLaren celebrates Mille Miglia win

With rumours suggesting sales haven’t gone quite according to plan, Mercedes has introduced a ‘special edition’ of the SLR McLaren.

Called the 722 Edition, the uprated SLR’s name recalls the race number of the Moss/Jenkinson 300 SLR that famously won the 1955 Mille Miglia road race.

Power from the SLR McLaren’s supercharged 5.4-litre V8 rises 16bhp to peak at 642bhp, apparently sufficient to drop the 0-62mph time to 3.6sec and raise the top speed marginally to 209mph. Although the on-paper performance gains aren’t massive, Mercedes has thought fit to stick on a set of larger (390mm) discs, lower the suspension 10mm, stiffen-up the damping and swap the 18in alloys for a set of 19s.

A modified front spoiler and splitter are visual clues to the car’s identity, and inside there’s special upholstery. The car's price in the UK will be £340,000, up £26,500.

Mercedes will preview the 722 Edition at the Paul Ricard circuit when it launches its new 'SLR Club’. Membership of this exclusive club is automatic when you buy an SLR, and benefits include a 'Safety and Speed Academy' that counts David Coulthard, Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig and Chris Goodwin amongst its instructors.
