Mercedes-AMG GT63 S Edition 1 to fight off Porsche Panamera Turbo

AMG’s new GT63 S Edition 1 to launch GT 4-Door range with bespoke styling features

Mercedes-AMG is gearing up to launch its new AMG GT 4-Door in September, offering up the flagship GT63 S Edition 1 as a limited-run model for the first 12 months of its life cycle. It’s not unusual for Mercedes to offer Edition 1 versions on most AMG and non-AMG models, each time bringing bespoke styling features.

The AMG GT63 S Edition 1 is no different, combining matt Designo Graphite Grey exterior paintwork (or more subtle Diamond White or Graphite Grey metallic finishes), with contrasting silver stripes along the flanks and over the long, aggressive bonnet.

Also standard on the Edition 1 is the Aerodynamics Package that is usually an option on the standard GT63 S. This package is comprised of a slightly redesigned lower bumper, integrating vertical slats in the lower intake, a larger front splitter, redesigned rear diffuser and the replacement of the standard car’s active rear wing with a fixed unit similar to that on the AMG GT R.

Finally, AMG’s increasingly ubiquitous cross-spoke forged alloy wheels are also available in a unique bright diamond-cut finish, eschewing AMG’s usual application of black wheels on its Edition 1 models.

Inside, the usually optional AMG bucket seats are fitted as standard, trimmed in a unique combination of black and dark grey Nappa leather, highlighted with yellow stitching across the seats, dash and doors. The centre console and steering wheel are also finished in gloss black, the latter slightly squared-off (like an Aston Martin), and wrapped in Dynamica microfibre, or Mercedes’ version of Alcantara.

Mechanically, the Edition 1 is unchanged from the standard model. This means the same 4-litre hot-vee twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 630bhp is channelled through AMG’s switchable 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, with its decoupling front axles for those with an interest in smokey, sideways action. The Edition 1 will make its debut at the ADAC Zurich 24h race at the Nürburgring this weekend, with deliveries starting in September. Prices for the Edition 1 have not been announced, but we expect it to sit well above the six-figure mark.
