McLaren 650S gets 600LT-inspired top-exit exhaust. And yes, it shoots flames

Fi Exhaust and Zacoe have created a flame-shooting, top-exit system for McLaren’s 650S and MP4-12C

Functional or not, the non-traditional exhaust exit is something we can’t help but get excited about, whether it be the side exit of the SLR McLaren, the top exit of the Porsche 918 Spyder, or more recently, McLaren’s Senna and 600LT. Taiwan-based Fi Exhaust and Zacoe have teamed up to bring this to Woking’s earlier offerings.

Frequency Intelligent (Fi) is renowned for its ability to make road-going supercars sound like a track-only racer, and has now focused its expertise on this unique new system. Developed for the MP4-12C and 650S, both of which come with rear-exit solutions from factory, the system is designed to improve sound, appearances, and performance.

Zacoe was responsible for creating the new carbonfibre exhaust surround and remodelling the now-exhaustless rear bumper, ensuring all components could withstand the extreme heat of a top-exit system. The brand also designed the new components to be aerodynamic for maximum performance, whilst directing gases above the rear wing to prevent heat damage.

As is the case with many of today’s supercars, all modern McLarens are able to shoot substantial flames from the factory. However, with the use of a less-restrictive, shortened exhaust system, this is only exaggerated. To ensure the exhaust itself can withstand the temperatures, the entire system is ceramic coated.

Many felt that the 12C and 650S lacked in the sound department, but of course, this system changes things... Though volume is turned up significantly, valves allow the driver to switch between ‘crazy loud’ and somewhat less antisocial at the touch of a button – the valves can also open automatically depending on RPM.

As cool as a top-exit exhaust may look (and sound), it also offers mild performance benefits. Due to its proximity to the engine, the exhaust run requires less material, which lowers weight, back pressure and heat.

Pricing and availability hasn’t been disclosed. However, Fi has confirmed that the system is compatible with the OEM heat shield and cat pipe, but is only currently available for coupe models.
