New Mazda CX-5 to head Mazda's lineup at LA auto show

Fine-driving crossover updated for 2017; Mazda also set to launch new prototype racer in LA

Mazda has revealed its lineup for the upcoming Los Angeles auto show, with the latest version of the firm's CX-5 crossover set to take centre stage.

Revealed only in a moody teaser image so far, the CX-5 will feature the latest interpretation of Mazda's current 'Kodo' design language - seen across the manufacturer's range from the Mazda 2 supermini to the 6 saloon, and of course the MX-5.

Mazda claims to have refined 'all aspects' of the CX-5, which first went on sale in 2012. Engine choice should be much the same as Mazda currently offers for the car, with 2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol units and 2.2-litre diesels.

Unlike many rivals, Mazda employs a "right sizing" policy for its engines rather than "downsizing" - the company believes that greater efficiency and performance will come from matching a car with a suitably-sized engine, rather than trying to squeeze more performance from a smaller turbocharged unit.

Joining the new CX-5 will be the Mazda MX-5 RF, first launched at the New York auto show earlier this year, as well as the full North American range of Mazda vehicles, including the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, and the smaller and larger CX-3 and CX-9 crossovers.

Mazda will also debut a Prototype race car in Los Angeles, likely a development of its entrant into the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.

We'll bring you more details on the CX-5 and Mazda's other LA launches in the run up to the show, which runs from November 18-27. Head to our LA auto show hub to read more.
