Koenigsegg Agera XS making Monterey debut

One-off supercar based on the Agera RS marks the model's US homologation

Koenigsegg will present the latest take on its Agera RS at this year’s Monterey car week, in the shape of the Agera XS.

Painted ‘Karosserie Orange’ and equipped with ‘the largest rear wing ever fitted to a Koenigsegg’ – as per the new owner’s wishes – the XS marks full homologation of the model for use on American roads.

‘Our re-entry into the US market [is] a watershed moment for our company’ said Christian von Koenigsegg on the company’s blog, ‘and the Agera XS is the perfect car to emphasise this occasion.’

Despite the new name, the XS is effectively an Agera RS – itself an evolution of the “one PS per kilogram” One:1 that evo drove in issue 202. RS models offer more kit though, with all the necessary driver electronic aids as well as desirable features like electrically-adjustable seats, Apple CarPlay compatibility and climate control.

Mechanically, the 1341bhp, twin-turbocharged V8 supercar also uses carbon-ceramic brakes, active dampers, active ride height, active aerodynamics at both the front and the rear, and uses a lightweight lithium ion phosphate battery. Koenigsegg quotes a kerb weight of 1395kg.

Joining the special Agera XS at Monterey will be Koenigsegg’s next hypercar, the Regera. First shown earlier this year at Geneva, the three-motor hybrid powertrain develops 1479bhp and 1475lb ft of torque.

Most remarkably though, that power and torque is sent through a single-speed, direct drive transmission with a hydraulic coupling to the engine.

Deliveries have slipped back a little – at Geneva, Koenigsegg quoted late 2016 but now aims for early 2017 – but the company confirms that only 80 examples will be made.
