Talking point: Would you really use a Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 on track?

Jethro loved the Z/28 he drove in evo issue 205. But is it really a suitable track car?

American carmakers have attracted plenty of flak in the past for producing half-baked performance cars, but Chevrolet’s latest Camaro Z/28 can consider itself well above such criticisms.

It looks fantastic, features a monstrous 7008cc V8 and puts 505bhp and 481lb ft to the rear wheels. It’s also surprisingly focused, with advanced dampers, carbon-ceramic brakes and a ‘Flying Car Mode’ that disables traction control while airborne. In other words, there’s genuine engineering prowess here.

And as Jethro Bovingdon found out when driving the car in Los Angeles for evo 205, it’s a fantastic performance car potentially worthy of inclusion in evo’s Car of the Year competition.

But at 1732kg it’s still very much an old-school muscle car at heart. And while the Z/28 has a hugely talented chassis, is it really track day material?

Its $72,300 price tag (just over £47,000 at current exchange rates) is great value given its performance, but would that money be better spent on something else if track days were a priority?

Post your thoughts below, or email letters@evo.co.uk. The best comments will be published in the next issue of evo.
