Audi A5 (2007-2016) review – design

Audi’s big A5 coupé is more genteel GT than hard-charging driver’s choice

Evo rating
RRP
from £29,190
  • Handsome, finely finished and capable, a fine GT car
  • Multitronic automatic ruins any serenity, not as good to drive as rivals

It might not be the youngest model in Audi’s range, nor against its rivals, but the A5 remains a handsome car. S line undoubtedly adds visual appeal, the more extrovert front and rear bumpers, LED-equipped headlights, lower stance and larger wheels all set off the A5 perfectly. The Black Edition gains black detailing and more kit still, though it only works with certain colours.

Perhaps the A5's greatest trick is that it hasn't really aged. Thanks to Audi's clean, uncluttered designs and a philospophy of evolution rather than revolution, the A5's now 9-year-old lines are little different to those of the company's modern offerings, and small tweaks here and there have done enough to modernise details such as headlights and alloy wheels.
