VW Golf and Scirocco R

Volkswagen prices its uber-hot hatches, the 266bhp Golf R and 261bhp Scirocco R

Volkswagen’s new two-pronged attack on the hot hatch class is now on sale. Both the Scirocco R and Golf R performance cars are available to order, with UK deliveries due in February 2010.

Both use the VW group’s 2-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, with the Scirocco boasting 261bhp and the Golf 266bhp.

The Scirocco coupe is the relative baby of the R range, with front-wheel drive, the slower 5.8sec 0-62mph time and the more efficient fuel economy and emissions numbers (34.9mpg and 189g/km). It costs from £26,945, and you can read more VW Scirocco R information here.

Its bigger brother is the new Golf R, which replaces the Golf R32. Its engine has two cylinders less than the R32 of course, although the car remains four-wheel drive. It’ll hit 62mph in 5.7sec while returning 33.2mpg and emitting 199g/km of CO2. The Golf R is the fastest accelerating Volkswagen ever, and you can read more here. It costs from £28,930 for a manual three-door to £30,820 for a DSG-equipped five-door.
