To celebrate the launch of the new 217bhp VW Golf GTI Mk7, we take a look at the previous performance Golfs

Volkswagen has just launched the all-new Golf GTI Mk7 at the Geneva motor show, where we found out that the GTI will be offered with a new Performance pack - adding 10bhp, a limited-slip-differential and a few more upgrades. The full 2013 VW Golf GTI UK prices and specs have also been announced, with prices starting at £25,845.

Launched at the Frankfurt motor show in 1975, perhaps even Volkswagen couldn't have predicted how much of an impression the GTI made on the automotive industry. Here’s a gallery of some of the best high performance Golfs through the years – right up to the new Mk7.
