New Volkswagen Golf R Estate spied

The next VW Golf R Estate has been spotted testing with some creative disguise applied

Volkswagen has been spotted putting the final touches on its forthcoming Mk8 Golf R Estate, which will join the hatchback later this year. The Golf R estate has become something of a modern cult classic for young families looking for a do-it-all performance load-lugger without the six-figure price tag of an Audi RS6 Avant. Its classless image, impressive performance and interior space have been a winning combination, appealing to enough customers to make it a popular and profitable model in the range.

Based on the all-new Golf 8, the new model will follow a similar template to previous iterations, but whether the new estate will carry across the most interesting element of its new powertrain, that torque vectoring rear differential, remains to be seen.

Aesthetically, the largely undisguised prototype features the same design elements as a standard Gold R, riding on the optional 19-inch 'Estoril' wheel design, while around the back are the typical quad exhaust tips.

It'll also feature the latest evo4 iteration of the EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 316bhp and 310lb ft of torque. We drive will then be sent via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

The rest of the package will be typical of the standard Golf 8, so expect impressive refinement, the new tech-forward interior with its endless digital interfaces, and impressive build quality. The Golf R Estate is expected to be revealed later this summer, finally completing the performance Golf range, and joining VW's expansive selection of R models including the Arteon R and Tiguan R.
