Volkswagen Golf GTI turned to 380bhp by Mountune52

For just over £2000, you can pump your Golf GTI to Golf R-smashing power figures

The Volkswagen GTI is famed for its accessible performance, but with some of the latest hot hatch offerings exceeding the 400bhp mark, a sub-250bhp factory figure may leave some wanting more. Mountune52 has a solution, increasing power through the use of components from the range-topping Golf R

Developed by Mountune’s VAG division, the new Stage 2+ kit can be applied to both Mk7 and 7.5 Golf GTIs, for a substantial increase of 161bhp and 118lb ft of torque over stock - this brings total output to 380bhp and 376lb ft, enough to worry even the mighty new Mercedes-AMG A45

As this power is still sent through the front wheels alone, performance figures aren’t quite as blistering as similarly-powerful all-wheel-drive rivals. Fitted with the manual ‘box, the GTI sees a 1.2sec improvement in its 0-62mph time, for a Clubsport S-beating figure of 5.2sec – top speed remains at 155mph.

To achieve this bump in power, Mountune has turned to the uprated IS38 turbocharger from the Golf R, a popular modification in Mk7 GTI community. Golf R spark plugs, an uprated clutch and more are also included. To ensure everything works in harmony, a bespoke tune is applied to the model’s 2.0-litre EA888 four-pot, allowing owners to switch between full power, standard, valet and anti-theft modes. The latter gives owners peace of mind when leaving the car for long periods, disabling the car entirely for would-be thieves.

A gauge display to provide data on the car’s systems is also equipped, alongside an adjustable shift light and the ability to time 0-62mph runs, quarter-mile times and more. Mountune52 will also apply a gearbox tune to DSG-equipped cars at an additional cost.

The Stage 2+ Golf GTI package will set you back £2099, and comes with a 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty. Buyers can either choose to fit the new components at home, or have the package applied at Mountune’s Essex facility.
