BMW M2 vs Ford Mustang GT – Which is fastest?

Our latest drag race puts German and American sports coupes against each other, and against the clock

Two more disparate takes on the two-door, four-seat coupe it’d be difficult to find. In the blue corner, BMW’s muscular M2, and in the red, the sophisticated new Ford Mustang GT.

While the former opts for a turbocharged inline-six, its American rival is the old-school option, with a five-litre, naturally-aspirated V8. The technology gap widens further with their transmissions: This particular BMW has a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, while the ‘Stang puts a simple and hefty six-speed manual lever between the seats.

With 360bhp the BMW is slightly down on the Mustang’s 410bhp and it’s shorter on torque too, with 369lb ft versus 391lb ft. That said, the BMW’s turbocharged motor delivers its wallop from 1450rpm and doesn’t stop delivering until 4750rpm – 500rpm after the Ford’s V8 has only just begun to deliver its best.

Then there’s the weight difference: The M2 is hardly waif-like with its 1570kg kerbweight, but the Mustang is a portly 1720kg. With all that in mind, which will be quickest in a straight line? You’ll have to watch our video above to find out. Click on the links below to find our previous Drag Battles.

evo's Drag Battles were all conducted at Alconbury's Cambridgeshire runway on a dry surface. All cars were supplied from manufacturers' press fleets on standard OEM tyres with the manufacturers were not aware of the tests being conducted.
