197bhp Vauxhall Astra GTC launched

Vauxhall has introduced the 197bhp 1.6-litre perol engine from the Cascada to the Astra GTC, making it the most powerful sub-VXR Astra on sale. Prices, specs and details here

Vauxhall has launched a revised version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged Astra GTC with a new engine, first seen in the convertible Cascada. Producing 197bhp and 221lb ft of torque, the new model is now the fastest non-VXR Astra you can buy.

Replacing a similarly sized 1.6 turbo engine, the new unit sees power rise by almost 30 per cent from the old 178bhp engine in the SRI model. Performance is improved too, with 0-62mph coming up in 7.2secs, going onto a 143mph top speed.

Naturally, the new engine is also cleaner and more economical, with Vauxhall claiming fuel economy of 51mpg and CO2 emissions of 154g/km. Twin balancer shafts are said to help reduce vibrations, making the engine much smoother too.

Vauxhall has also introduced a new multimedia system, which combines a new satnav system with voice control and much improved Bluetooth connectivity for both audio streaming and phone calls. The £855 option features a 7-inch display and full European mapping.

On sale now, the new 197bhp Astra GTC will cost from £20,995, with the first deliveries starting in Spring 2014.
