Toyota FT-86 meets the ancestors

The Toyota FT-86 rear-drive sports car meets its Supra, Corolla and Celica family

The golden age of the high performance Toyota officially ended some time in the mid-90s. Can the FT-86 change that?  Here the concept meets a trio of truly iconic Toyota talent. A rally-bred Celica GT4, a rear-drive Corolla and a muscle-bound Supra sum up just how good (and driver-focused) Toyotas once were, and also pile on the pressure in anticipation of the new ’86. We’ve been led to expect a 2-litre Boxer engine with around 200bhp sitting up front, and thanks to the flat-four configuration the engine sits very low, meaning the bonnet does too. The concept car sports huge 20in wheels – which we find a questionable choice. A couple of hundred ponies will have to work extremely hard to get those tyres spinning in true Hachi-Roku style… Take a look at this month’s evo for Chris Harris's views on the FT-86 concept, and why he thinks the mid-80s AE-86 Corolla should have wipers on the side windows. Details of evo Issue 142 this way, and preview pictures in the last four shots below...
