Is a regular Subaru Impreza STI not enough for you? You aren’t alone – specialist Subaru tuner Litchfield feels exactly the same, hence the Impreza STI Type-20.  It’s a super hardcore version of the top-spec Impreza, boasting a fairly insane 395bhp and 375lb ft of torque, the latter available from just 3500rpm.

This is all extracted from a 2-litre engine, which gains the scarcely believable boost via a Type-20 twinscroll turbo. 0-60mph is slated at just 3.9sec – a tenth quicker than a Ferrari F430. Top speed is electrically pegged-back to 165mph. To help handle the extra grunt, the car’s track is widened 14mm while brakes are 365mm Alcon 6-pots.

There is new AST adjustable suspension, re-valved steering and a lengthened wheel-base, all in the name of tightening up the chassis and hauling in that extra power to make the STI Type-20 more of the cracker we’d expect. The car weighs in at £36,995, which includes new lightweight 18in wheels, revised grille, subtle bodykit and the option of some Maserati-style taillights.

There’s also a three-year warranty, Thatcham category one alarm and a tracker to balance the package and make things appear a little less loony. It should provide formidable competition to the rumoured Mitsubishi Evo FQ-400…
