Subaru STI Performance Concept arrives in New York

Concept showcases STI tuning capability and parts

Subaru has revealed the STI Performance Concept at the New York motor show. Developed to demonstrate the tuning arm’s engineering prowess, the concept gains a racing engine and modified chassis setup.

That racing engine is based on the Subaru BRZ Super GT’s unit. In the racer it produces close to 300bhp and 330lb ft of torque, which is substantially more than the 197bhp road car with which it shares its body. Air intake and exhaust modifications have also been added.

The concept’s chassis has seen significant modifications, with uprated suspension, brakes and aerodynamic features. All are available on STI’s aftermarket options list.

‘At STI we know from our racing that to win, it is important not only to have high power but also that all aspects of performance are balanced over the whole car,’ explains Yoshio Hirakawa, president of Subaru Tecnica International (STI).

‘When we achieve this balance, the driver feels that the car is easy to handle and reliable, and he can use it fully to the limits of its performance.’

Though the Concept Performance STI appears to be production ready, it won’t be sold. Instead, it will remain a demonstrator of what STI can do.

Subaru Tecnica International wants to grow its presence in the aftermarket parts industry and produce more STI-tuned cars. It also wants to expand its involvement in motorsport, while producing more STI products in one of Subaru’s key markets, the US.
