Skoda shows new city car

Skoda has shown images of its new Citigo, its version of the Volkswagen Up city car

Skoda has released images of the Citigo, a new city car closely related to the Volkswagen Up.

As you’d expect it’s set to offer pretty much the same deal as Volkswagen’s new baby, but with a healthy Skoda discount. Prices should start from around the £7000 mark when it goes on sale in the UK next year.

The Citigo is part of Skoda’s strategy of introducing a new model every six months for the next three years – and it will be followed shortly afterwards by the production version of the MissionL saloon concept that was shown at the recent Frankfurt motor show.

Not that the Citigo is going to offer much for anyone looking to combine its cutesy charm with meaningful performance. It’s being launched with a  1-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in two states of tune – 58bhp and 73bhp. Both (officially) return over 60mpg and sneak under the 100g/km CO2 threshold that brings free road tax. Quicker versions are likely to follow, though – including a ‘Skodaized’ version of VW’s Up GT, which might even get to wear ‘vRS’ branding.
