SEAT wins WTCC

Spaniards crowned 2008 Drivers' and Manufacturers' champs

SEAT Leon TDI WTCC

SEAT has been crowned victorious in the World Touring Car championship, wrapping up Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles with a couple of rounds to spare. At the same time, the Leon TDI became the first diesel-powered racer to win the WTCC or, indeed, any FIA championship.

Five drivers have raced for SEAT’s WTCC team in 2008. And each one has won a race – Spaniard Jordi Gene, Portugese Tiago Monteiro and Swede Rickard Rydell have all proved successful, while the other two drivers – the French Yvan Muller and Italian Gabriele Tarquini – are fighting to become the Drivers’ champion at the final round of World Touring Cars in Macau, China on November 15 and 16.

The success comes after SEAT decided not to return to the British Touring Cars next year. It finished behind Vauxhall, who took the clean sweep of Driver, Manufacturer and Team titles in 2008.
