2016 Vauxhall Astra review – new Astra is best yet, but can it excite? - MPG and running costs

With an excellent engine and an outstanding ride the new Astra has some great attributes, but sadly it isn’t a drivers’ car

  • Great engine, unexpectedly fast and feels well built
  • Overall, just not very exciting

MPG and running costs

Normal hatchbacks like the Astra should be cheap and efficient to run. For the most part the Astra fits that bill; you get three years warranty and a one year subscription to Vauxhall’s OnStar concierge service. The tyres are a common size, and it’s not designed to run on any racy rubber, so they will be good value. The problem comes with fuel consumption. As with all modern cars with downsized turbo engines, the Astras’s official combined MPG of 46.3 seems optimistic. Use any of the performance it and expect that to be less impressive, I averaged between 31-33mpg. That is a relatively respectable figure, and with even a slightly more careful right foot, that number would certainly rise but it's not as good as the official figure.
