If you thought that high-revving, high-output V8s were the preserve of Ferrari, think again. Audi's new RS4 has a naturally aspirated 4163cc V8 that revs to 8250rpm and puts out 420bhp, pushing it through the magical 100bhp-per-litre barrier. This makes the new FSI (direct injection) V8 a massive 80bhp more powerful than the old S4's 4.2-litre V8, while peak torque is 317lb ft at 5500rpm, 90 per cent of which is available between 2250 and 7600rpm. And it will be offered with a six-speed manual 'box.
