Formula 1 test update

Latest news from F1 as pre-season tests take place in Jerez, while Villeneuve could return

The third day of the third F1 test has just ended with Red Bull’s Mark Webber topping the timesheets. Before today there had been very little dry running, but finally the Spanish sun has started shining on Jerez, allowing Webber to become the first man this season to dip below 1 minute 20 seconds. Of course what can be read into that is limited, but it’s fun to speculate. Alonso (Ferrari), Button (McLaren), Hulkenburg (Williams) and Schumacher (Mercedes) are next up, all separated by a smidge over a second. Times in themselves are not crucial, but getting plenty of laps in is. It’s the only way to discover how the cars react to various fuel loads and the different compounds of Bridgestone rubber. Hulkenburg scored more laps than the rest with 137 under his wheels, but most of the field have been enjoying reliable runs. It’s no surprise to still see Di Grassi in the Virgin and Kovalainen in the Lotus at the bottom of the laptime chart, but only 0.01s splits them and they’re just over two seconds off Schumacher’s time. Away from Jerez, Stefan GP fired up their 2010 Toyota for the first time today as they wait to be granted an F1 entry. They have also confirmed their potential driver line-up of Kazuki Nakajima and Jacques Villeneuve.
