Formula 1 museum at Donington Park contains array of Grand Prix cars

Donington Park will be the new home of the British Grand Prix from 2010, and at a recent launch for the circuit’s new F1-friendly layout, the doors to the Donington Grand Prix exhibition were flung wide open.

It’s the largest collection of GP cars in the world, with its five halls stuffed with over 130 cars.

It has been open since March 1973, with the man responsible – Tom Wheatcroft – putting in undeniably large amount of effort into amassing a fascinating collection of iconic racing cars.

There’s a whole host of cars that have been piloted by the big names – Clark, Moss, Senna and Fangio amongst others. There are also some hugely valuable and intriguing cars including the Cosworth Four-Wheel Drive and the twin-engined Alfa Romeo Bimotore. The Italian boasts 500bhp and 200mph; huge numbers back in 1936 when it first raced.

Scroll down and take a look through a small selection of the highlights, and if you’re ever passing or plan to attend an event at Donington it’s well worth a look round. You might even get to try a simulator of the new track…
