Welsh circuit emerges from major makeover sporting four new layouts

Teetering on the edge of North Wales, Anglesey Circuit, with its stunning views and fabulous Radar Complex, has always been one of evo’s favourite haunts, so we were somewhat apprehensive when we heard that it was to be dug up and replaced with an all-new facility for 2007. Curious to see what would emerge from this regeneration, we headed up there shortly after its opening to have a look.

The first thing to strike you about the new track is just how wide it is – 12 metres wide to be precise, or 33 per cent broader than the old circuit. There are now four possible combinations of layout available: Club at 0.8 miles, National at 1.2 miles, Coastal at 1.55 miles and the full International GP at 2.1 miles. The most popular is likely to be the Coastal track, on which the first race meeting was held at the end of May.

We were relieved to find that the undulations of the old track remain in the new, and although you can feel a little lost on the vast expanses of blacktop the surface is very good. Early reports suggest that it's a superb track for spectators too.

All in all the new circuit deserves to be a great success. And who knows, perhaps one day we could see a Welsh Grand Prix…
