The Bugatti Veyron may be the world’s fastest production car, but during a recent test on a naval airfield in California it was soundly whupped in a 0-200mph sprint by an 1100bhp twin-turbo Hennessey Viper Venom.

The shootout was part of Road & Track magazine’s ‘tuner versus supercar’ test, which also included a Murciélago, a Ruf Rt 12, an SLR McLaren and a Lingenfelter C6 Corvette, but the Viper and Veyron were the centre of attention.

Even with reduced power at lower revs, the Viper was hampered by severe wheelspin up to 100mph, taking 7.3sec to reach that speed compared to the Veyron’s 6.2sec. After that, though, it got into its stride, reaching 200mph in 20.3sec, at which point the Veyron’s speed was ‘just’ 187.4mph.
