Mercedes-AMG SL63 gets tuner upgrade to nearly 800bhp

G-Power endows luxury convertible with an extra 200bhp+ alongside a whopping 811lb ft of torque

Owners of the latest-generation Mercedes-AMG SL63 can give their cars a new lease of life thanks to a new upgrade from German tuner G-Power. The work takes the power of the car’s twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 up from 530-577bhp as standard (depending on when the car was produced) to 789bhp, while torque rises from 590-664lb ft to a tarmac-tearing 811lb ft.

This is thanks to a modification of the two turbochargers alongside additional software and hardware changes. Both turbochargers get larger turbine and compressor wheels as well as optimised compressor turbine blades for a reduction in exhaust back-pressure and gas temperature and an increase in air flow rate. A new stainless steel exhaust system, complete with new downpipes and sports catalysts, also helps the engine breathe more freely – whilst providing you with more V8 bark, of course.

As you’d expect with such gains in power, the car’s performance figures have been improved over the standard SL63’s. According to the tuner, the roadster’s 0-62mph sprint is reduced to just 3.5sec from the standard car’s best effort of 4.1sec, while top speed comes in at a supercar-like 211mph thanks to the removal of the factory speed limiter.

Other modifications include the addition of 21-inch forged aluminium diamond-cut wheels wrapped in 265/30 ZR21 (front) and 295/30 ZR21 (rear) ‘high-performance tyres’ to help the G-Power SL put as much of its new-found extra muscle to the ground as possible. We said the standard SL63 was ‘a handful on the limit’ in our review, so with even more power and torque, every bit of additional grip will be welcome.

The G-Power modifications take the SL63’s performance beyond that offered by, say, the new 522bhp BMW 850i Convertible, with its 0-62mph of just 3.7secs and measly top speed of 155mph, meaning the upgrade should offer plenty of appeal for existing SL owners. Pricing for the kit has yet to be announced.
