Mercedes pulls the wraps off its biggest AMG-badged SUV yet, the 549bhp GL63
Mercedes has just revealed its brand new GL63 AMG performance SUV. For those of you who find the G63 just that little bit too agricultural, the freshly launched GL63 AMG completes Mercedes’ high-speed SUV range. Like most other AMGs the GL63 is powered by a 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8, here making 549bhp and 561lb ft, matching it closely with the 547bhp BMW X5M.
Compared to its rivals, the GL63 has a clearer focus on comfort. The car’s air suspension, dampers and roll-stabilisation system constantly adapt to conditions, promoting ride comfort or ultimate stability depending on the driver’s inputs.
Weight, although currently undisclosed, is likely to top 2500kg, making its 4.9 second sprint to 62mph rather impressive. The top speed, as with most AMGs, is electronically limited to 155mph. Economy isn’t completely forgotten; Controlled Efficiency mode – which the car automatically starts in – offers stop-start and quick shuffling through the automatic gearbox’s seven speeds, while the power steering deactivates when the car is cruising.
Flicking the gearbox to Sport or Manual disables a number of these functions and offers – in Mercedes’ words – a ‘thrilling acoustic effect’ on upshifts. A specially produced Bang and Olufsen stereo can be specified to complete the aural experience, while 21in wheels, a faux-diffuser and smatterings of AMG badges offer the requisite visual bling.
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG will be available from November. Though there’s no official pricing yet, you’d better set aside around £90,000 if you like what you see.
