New York show: Mercedes-Benz GL-Class

The all-new GL-Class Mercedes has been unveiled at the New York motor show.

With a line-up of new, more efficient engines and a whole host of clever systems, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz has been revealed at the New York motor show. Based on the M-Class, this seven-seat luxury SUV is due to go on sale in the UK in early 2013.

The GL will initially be offered with a 258bhp 3.0-litre 'GL 350 BlueTec' diesel engine, and the 408bhp 4.7-litre direct injection V8 petrol 'GL 500'. On average, the engines are 19-percent more efficient than the predecessor.

The BlueEFFICIENCY package fitted to both models includes start/stop, electric power steering and eco tyres, as well as extensive use of lightweight materials - helping to bring the CO2 emissions down to just 192g/km for the diesel model and 262 for the V8.

Some very clever driver aids have been developed for the big Mercedes, and one of the most intriguing is the ESP with 'Steer Control' - which is actually capable of correcting an oversteering car. The GL also comes with 'Collision Prevention', Crosswind Assist' as standard.
