Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake details

Mercedes-Benz pulls the wraps of its Audi A7 rivaling 'coupe estate', its long rumoured CLS Shooting Brake

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its new CLS Shooting Brake, a car designed to combine the style of a coupe with the practicality of an estate.

Mercedes claims it has created a new niche in the market with this model, although it is similar in execution (and bootspace) to the Audi A7 Sportback.

Initially, only two engines will be available, both diesel.  The 250 CDI produces 204bhp and 369lb ft of torque. It mixes a 0-62mph time of 7.8sec with 53.3mpg and 139g/km of CO2 emissions.  The more powerful 350 CDI has 265bhp and 457lb ft and takes 6.6sec to reach 62mph. Naturally it's a little thirstier, achieving 47mpg and emitting 159g/km of CO2. CLS Shooting Brakes come fitted with a seven-speed automatic transmission and stop-start tech as standard.

A CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake is expected next year and will use the same 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine as the CLS63 AMG saloon, which produces 518bhp and 516lb ft in standard form.

A load volume of up to 1550 litres is available in the boot, which can be specced with a striking cherry-wood luggage floor.

The Shooting Brake will be available with a host of gadgets, from Mercedes' Active Park Assist, which will park the car automatically, to dynamic LED headlights which combine the colour of LED daytime driving lights with the performance and energy efficiency of bi-xenons.

UK specification and pricing are still to be confirmed, although it is likely to command a premium over the standard CLS, with prices starting at around £48,000. The new Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake goes on sale in the UK in November.
