McLaren and Pirelli collaborate on a new winter tyre and wheel package

McLaren has matched Pirelli’s winter tyres with brand new alloy wheels and made them available on its Sport Series models through dealers

In conjunction with Pirelli, McLaren has developed a winter wheels and tyre set which is available now to Sports Series customers. The price of the package has yet to be revealed but it will be available through McLaren Retailers.

The new package offered across the four models under the Sports Series banner sees the car’s standard alloys replaced with forged, 14-spoke items shod in McLaren-approved, Pirelli MC Sottozero 3 tyres. The new winter tyres offer significant improvements in grip and braking performance in wintery weather conditions.

Once temperatures dip below 7 degrees celsius winter tyres begin to outperform high performance summer tyres. In the case of McLarens, this drop-off in performance reduces braking distances by 10% in wet conditions and up to 20% on snowy tarmac.

“Choosing the right type of tyre to suit seasonal weather and road conditions should be a priority for every McLaren driver wanting to enjoy their car safely all-year round,” commented Carl Whipp, Aftersales Director, McLaren Automotive. “Regardless of whether winter tyres are a legal requirement, having them ready and waiting on a second set of wheels will allow customers to switch to the optimum tyre choice quickly and easily when winter arrives – which is why we have teamed up with our tyre partner, Pirelli, to offer the McLaren Winter Wheels and Tyres set exclusively through McLaren Retailers.”

The fitment of winter tyres in the UK isn’t a legal requirement – unlike in many European countries – despite sub-7 degree celsius temperatures existing for much of the year. McLaren has yet to quote a price for its winter tyre package but if the wheel and tyre combo proves too expensive, customers can skip the new lightweight alloy wheels and just get the tyres fitted separately.
