Mazda MX-5 Kuro special edition

Another Mazda MX-5 special edition in the shape of the new Kuro

On the back of announcing its 205bhp MX-5 GT concept car, Mazda has revealed another special edition MX-5 - one that will definitely go into production.

The MX-5 Kuro is based on the existing SE and Sport Tech models and will be available as a 1.8i-engined soft-top and 2.0i Roadster Coupe.

The Kuro doesn't bring any performance gains, the 124bhp 1.8i and 158bhp 2.0i both matching the 0-62mph times of their non-Kuro equivalents (9.9sec and 7.9sec respectively).

There are cosmetic changes though.  A diffuser-style rear bumper, large diameter sports exhaust and unique 'Kuro Edition' badging are all added, whilst a black roof, black door mirrors, and dark gunmetal 17-inch alloy wheels combine with the choice of three exterior colours - red, white and black.

Only 200 examples of the soft-top and 400 of the Roadster Coupe will be available in the UK, priced at £18,495 and £21,995 respectively. Interestingly, the soft-top costs £500 more than its base 1.8i SE, but the Roadster Coupe is £1000 cheaper than a comparable 2.0i Sport Tech.

The Mazda MX-5 Kuro goes on sale in July.
