BBR upgrades for Mazda MPS models

Tuning company BBR has developed a series of upgrades for the Mazda 2.3-litre DSI turbo engine, which powers the MPS versions of the Mazda 3 and 6.

Tuning company BBR has developed a series of upgrades for the Mazda 2.3-litre DSI turbo engine, which powers the MPS versions of the Mazda 3 and 6.

The tuning upgrades are available in three phases. Phase one consists of a simple ECU remap, which BBR claims not only boosts peak outputs to 290bhp and 330lb-ft (gains of 34bhp and 50lb-ft) but also improves throttle response and the response of the turbo boost map, whilst reducing fuel consumption at cruising speeds.

Boosting engine output to a claimed 318bhp and 370lb-ft, the phase two upgrade costs £1645 with a fitting charge of £395. The second phase adds a high-flow fuel pump, uprated high-flow turbo inlet hoses, a performance air filter a stainless steel exhaust downpipe with sports catalyst.

The third phase involves modifications to the forced induction system. The top-mounted Mazda intercooler is replaced with a BBR designed front mounted unit. This improves cooling efficiency whilst reducing of heat soak, inherent in top-mounted intercoolers.

Customers can also choose from two replacement turbochargers. The first, a BBR design, supports up to 350bhp. For customers looking for even more power, the stock turbo can be replaced with a Garret item. BBR say that it increases low-rev turbo lag, but massively improves top end performance, making outputs of up to 400bhp possible. 

Prices for the phase three tune are ‘on application’ as conversions are tailored to individual requirements.

BBR have also developed a performance spring set for the Mazda 3. They claim to improve chassis dynamics on both road and track, whilst subtly lowering the ride height, giving a more aggressive stance. They can be used in conjunction with the standard Mazda dampers or with BBR’s own specification of Koni adjustable items, which are also claimed to improve the 3’s ride. 

The springs cost £165 and the dampers £795. Should you not want to tackle the installation yourself, fitting for both items is an additional £300.
