BBR Super 225 upgrade for mk3 NC Mazda MX-5

UK-based Mazda MX-5 specialist BBR reveals new Super 225 upgrade for NC-generation models

British Mazda tuner BBR has revealed a new Super 225 upgrade for the third generation Mazda MX-5 built between 2005 and 2013. The package combines a selection of BBR-engineered upgrades to the NC’s naturally aspirated 2-litre four-cylinder engine without resorting to turbochargers.

As its name suggests the upgrades yield a generous lift in peak power and torque over the standard powertrain, peaking at 224bhp, a 67bhp rise from standard. Not only is the power lifted, but it’s been done so without compromising on driveability or reliability, while engine response is also improved.

The changes consist specifically of new components that help the engine breathe more effectively, with changes on both the intake and exhaust sides of the motor. The biggest single development has been the fitment of a bespoke individual throttle body assembly that doesn’t require any modifications to the MX-5’s factory engine management system. This new throttle body setup is paired with a set of new camshafts and aluminium inlet ram pipe.

On the exhaust side, BBR’s bespoke stainless steel 4-into-1 exhaust manifold is connected to Maza’s standard mid-pipe and muffler, but is finished off at the rear with a pair of new 3.5-inch tips. None of the modifications require bodywork alterations and all are completely reversible.

The result of these upgrades is a 224bhp peak power figure at 7550rpm, with 174lb ft of torque available at 5950rpm, 67bhp and 36lb ft increases respectively. BBR also offers a range of NC-specific chassis upgrades to go with the powertrain modifications, including everything from a simple strut brace through to upgraded brakes, wheels and body decals.

Packaged together, the Super 225 kit is priced at £3495 as a DIY package, or £4295 including installation at BBR’s Brackley-based headquarters. For those just interested in the 225’s throttle bodies, an individual ITB package is also available from £1795 too.
