Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster to raise the roof at Frankfurt

Lamborghini’s Aventador S flagship gets an obligatory beheading before Frankfurt debut next week

Lamborghini’s Aventador S is now available in Roadster form, giving drivers even more exposure to the glorious V12 engine note and patrons’ envious looks.

Featuring the same removable roof as the previous Aventador LP700-4 Roadster, the ‘S’ brings across all the technical and aesthetic upgrades from the S coupe. The Roadster’s biggest technical change is the inclusion of four-wheel steering, a feature that transformed the original Aventador's intimidating handling.

As in the coupe, this system steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low speeds to improve agility and turns in the same direction as the fronts at high speed to improve stability. In conjunction with this is significantly improved downforce via redesigned lower aero and a more effective rear diffuser, all helping increase cornering speeds and high speed stability.

Basic suspension architecture is unchanged from the coupe, meaning a combination of pushrod springs assisted by magnetorheological dampers. As in the coupe, the suspension setup has been developed to make the most of the four-wheel steering system.

As well as these chassis upgrades, the Aventador S Roadster also receives a more powerful 6.5-litre V12 engine, now producing 730bhp and 506lb ft of torque. One drawback of losing the roof however is a weight increase of around 50kgs, meaning the Roadster will take a touch longer to reach 62mph at 3.0sec before topping out at 217mph (with the roof in place).

Visually, the S Roadster also gains the same updated styling as on the coupe, with more aggressive bumpers and a redesigned rear valance. Inside, the Aventador is trimmed to the same exceptional standard as the coupe.

Priced from just over £250k in the UK, most will probably leave the dealership costing considerably more thanks to Lamborghini's expansion of its AD Personam personalisation service. Reaching customers in February next year, the Aventador S Roadster will hopefully mimic the coupe in offering a less intimidating and more enjoyable driving experience.
