Honda S2000: The End

Edition 100 signals the end of production for Honda's S2000 roadster with no replacement

The Honda S2000 is set to bow out of production this year, a decade after first hitting the UK. And the sad news is that Honda won’t be replacing it. The last of the VTEC roadsters will roll off the Suzuka production line in June, with this Edition 100 to mark the occasion.

As the name suggests, just 100 will make it into British hands, although the car itself is little more than a cosmetic special edition. The same 237bhp 2-litre VTEC that’s put in ten years of service in the S2000 remains as normal, although with a 9000rpm redline it’s still a fairly striking unit.

It’s an award winner too, taking five consecutive International Engine of the Year gongs. And while the roadster is now fairly long in the tooth, it’ll be missed, especially with no successor on the horizon. Honda is diverting funds from its sporting projects – Formula 1, a new NSX, and now a new S2000 – and piling investment into cleaner, greener projects such as the Insight and FCX Clarity fuel cell.

Those wishing to grab one of the last slices of S2000 pie will need to set aside £29,086. That buys a Grand Prix white exterior (perhaps ironic given Honda’s absence from F1), graphite effect alloys and a plush red leather interior. There’re the inevitable numbered plaques to mark out which of the hundred you’ve bought, too.

The car will be officially unveiled at the Geneva motor show on March 3. The Edition 100 should help tip UK S2000 sales over the 8000 mark, with 7,898 shifted since 1999 so far. There have been 110,673 sold worldwide. Read evo's views of the Honda S2000 here.
