Ford GT concept unveiled, new supercar set for launch in 2016

Ford has pulled the covers off its GT concept in Detroit

Ford’s hotly anticipated GT concept has arrived at the Detroit auto show. Said to preview a production car due for sale in 2016, the new Ford GT will take on the likes of Ferrari’s forthcoming turbocharged 458 and Porsche’s future 911 GT3 RS.

Powering the concept is a turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost mid-mounted engine, producing over 600bhp and sending power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle.

The body, constructed of carbonfibre, features active-aero to enhance braking and downforce, whilst reducing drag when not needed.

The chassis is largely constructed of aluminium, and features racing car style inboard mounted pushrod suspension with aluminium wishbones all round - a feature no doubt useful for the Ford's soon to be confirmed Le Mans racing activities.

The two-seat supercar features an ‘F1-style’ steering wheel with a stalkless steering column. Fixed seats with an adjustable steering column and pedal box ensure weight distribution is optimised for every driver.

Raj Nair, Ford Group’s Vice President explains: ‘While we hope enthusiasts rejoice about this all-new GT, all Ford customers will benefit from the ultimate performance Ford and its new-generation innovations.’
