Abt Sportsline AS5 Sportback 3.0 TDI review

Abt Sportline gives the Audi A5 3.0-litre TDI Sportback a makeover

Evo rating
  • Well balanced selection of modifications
  • Not available directly from UK Audi dealerships

What is it?The official, Kempton based Audi tuners have got their hands on the 3-litre diesel AS5 and have given the engine a boost, the suspension new springs and the looks a well-judged makeover  Technical highlightsA remap and an Abt turbocharger combine to increase horsepower from 237bhp to 306bhp and torque from 369 lb ft to a very useful 457 lb ft. The large 20-inch ‘CR’ wheels look great filling the arches and are controlled by shorter, stiffer springs. Continuing the aesthetics theme there are subtle revisions to the splitter, grille, wings and rear spoiler. All of which work well, the S5 was always a handsome machine and the additions enhance that.   What’s it like to drive? The engine retains its smooth delivery and it has similar characteristics to the standard car, it’s just that this one goes quicker. The suspension revisions sharpen everything up without ruining the ride quality.  How does it compare?Overall the work strikes a very good balance. It would have been easy for a company with such a successful racing history to make this overly aggressive, but these changes show a impressive level of restraint. Anything else I need to know? They also do a conversion for the petrol 2.0 TFSI engine, which raises power from 177 to 271bhp.
