BMW Z4 update

Details and prices of new BMW Z4 roadster emerge; evo drives it next issue

BMW has officially launched its all-new Z4 roadster.

For the first time it comes with a folding hard-top, something its forebears (both Z3 and mk1 Z4) didn't get. In one swing the new car replaces both present Z4 roadster and coupe bodystyles.

There are three engine options to begin with. The range kicks off with the £28,645 sDrive23i, which gets a 2.5-litre 6-cyl with 201bhp and 184lb ft and a 151mph top speed. 0-62mph takes 6.6sec. Next up is the 3-litre sDrive30i. It weighs in at £32,660 and boasts 254bhp and 229lb ft, with a 5.8sec dash and a limited 155mph maximum.

Top of the range is the £37,060 twin-turbo 3-litre sDrive35i, which ups power and torque to 302bhp and 295lb ft. It clears 0-62mph in 5.2sec and also tops out at a reined-in 155mph.

It goes on sale in May with BMW predicting annual sales of around 3500 cars in the UK. By comparison the previous Z4 enjoyed a peak sales figure of 4815 in 2004.

evo has driven the BMW Z4 sDrive35i, and you can read all about it in the next issue, which goes on sale Weds April 1. Don't miss it.
