BMW X4 review - What is BMW's mini X6 like? - MPG and running costs

The small SUV coupe is undoubtedly capable, but it just isn't as talented as other, more performance oriented SUVs

  • Comfortable with a range of impressive diesel engines
  • Doesn't have the agility of other sporting SUVs

MPG and running costs

Considering its selection of diesel engines, the X4 is appropriately frugal. BMW claims the four-cylinder manual X4 achieves 52.3mpg on a combined run, while the automatic is slightly better with a consumption figure of 54.3mpg.

Predictably the 3-litre six-cylinder models aren’t as economical, but the claimed figures are still impressive. The xDrive30d’s combined MPG figure is 47.9 while the 35d is only slightly worse with 47.1mpg.

As with all manufacturer claimed figures, you should expect to achieve worse. When driven enthusiastically, the xDrive30d we tested averaged 32-34mpg; nowhere near BMW’s economy figures but still not bad for a 1820kg four-wheel drive SUV.

This weight might not put too large a dent in the X4’s MPG figure, but it will put a lot of strain on the brakes if driven hard regularly. So, although the X4 isn’t an all-out performance car and shouldn’t cost a huge amount to run, we expect brake pads to need relatively frequent attention.
