BMW i8 'Futurism Edition' celebrates 50th anniversary of BMW in Italy

Paint scheme created out of Giacomo Balla's artwork

BMW has unveiled the i8 'Futurism Edition' produced in collaboration with Garage Italia Customs. Featuring a paint scheme that utilises Giacomo Balla's "Lampada ad Arco" painting, the design symbolises the advent of electricity in the 1900s.

BMW has an extensive history of working with artists, with its 'art cars' being synonomous with some of the most iconic artistic talent over the last few decades. Andy Warhol famously painted a BMW M1, while David Hockney turned his hand to a BMW 850 CSi.

The artwork featured on this car was in fact originally on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It represents a street lamp powered by electricity under moonlight.

The car will make an appearance at the 2016 Mille Miglia alongside a BMW 328 driven by Sergio Solero, BMW Italy's president and CEO.

evo recently spotted an unusual collection of i8s sporting custom paint schemes. A purple, yellow and green i8 all put together using BMW Individual paint. You can see them on our Instagram here
