BMW 620d Gran Turismo joins the range

BMW has introduced the 620d Gran Turismo as an entry level model for its luxury cruiser.

BMW has revealed the new 620d Gran Turismo, which will provide the entry point to the 6-series Gran Turismo range when it goes on sale in July 2018. It marks the first installation of BMW’s familiar, turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine in the 6-series, where it’ll augment the current engine lineup which consists of various four- and six-cylinder engines.

Slotting into the range below the six-cylinder diesel of the 630d, the new engine isn’t as gutsy, offering up 187bhp at 4,000rpm and 295lb ft of torque between 1,750rpm and 2,500rpm. As such, the 620d needs 7.9 seconds to hit 62mph from a standing start, making it the slowest member of the 6-series Gran Turismo family (by 1.6 seconds).

Drive is transmitted to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which is universally equipped across the BMW 6-series range. The powertrain combination returns 57.6mpg on a combined cycle and emits 129g/km - the best fuel consumption and CO2 figures the 6-series has to offer.

Elsewhere in BMW’s ranks the engine is paired with a four-wheel drive platform, although that option is unavailable here. BMW, however, does offer the larger diesel engine variaint with xDrive.

Four-wheel-drive aside, there’s a long list of running-gear-based upgrades on the options list that can be specified, if you're willing to pay, such as Adaptive Two-Axle Air Suspension, Integral Active Steering and the Executive Drive system with Active Roll Stabilisation.

While the Bavarian marque is yet to disclose a price for the BMW 620d Gran Turismo, we know it will be less than the £47,930 630i SE.
