340bhp BMW Hybrid 5-Series launched: 340bhp BMW Hybrid 5-Series launched

Details of the new ActiveHybrid5 - capable of 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds.

BMW has released images and full details on its latest hybrid saloon, the ActiveHybrid5, combining a TwinPower turbo six-cylinder engine with an electric motor and 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid 5-series puts out a combined power of 340bhp, which will do 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds, while still averaging 42mpg, with an official CO2 figure of 149-163 g/km (depending on tyre choice).

The TwinPower six-cylinder engine is the turbocharged unit found in the current 535i, and the electric motor develops 40 kW (55bhp), fed by a powerful but compact lithium-ion battery stored in the boot, minimising any cabin intrusion.

Charging of the motor primarily takes place during coasting, or braking, and at speeds of up to 100mph, the ECO PRO mode means that the petrol engine can be switched off completely, running only on electric to provide a refined drive while maximising efficiency.

Externally, there's very little to tell the ActiveHybrid5 from a standard 5-Series, with a few unique styling tweaks, such as the galvanised grille-slats and matt chrome tailpipes. It's also the only 5-Series to be available in the Bluewater metallic colour.
